          What is innovation?

          The word “innovation” derives originally derives from the Latin verb innovare what literally means renewal and describes the introduction of something new. The Business Dictionary defines “innovation“ as "the process of translating an idea or invention into a good service that creates value." In order for a good invention to become a successful innovation, it has to meet people's needs. It has to recognize a problem, look at it realistically and solve it. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           Innovation is the only way for a company to generate a sustainable competitive advantage and market success. It shows that
           &#xD;
      &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
        
            the more technology we had, the less manual work we needed
           &#xD;

           . Optimizations of processes make cost reductions, economic growth, and better working conditions even possible - the history of the industrial revolutions has proven this repeatedly.

           Automation with the help of computers in the 1970s shaped the third industrial revolution. In contrast to the previous serial production in the factories, the easy human work was now increasingly taken over by machines.

            So, what can we expect from the digital revolution (4.0)?

           One of the goals of digitization is to

            secure a sustainable competitive advantage

           . In order to secure this benefit, companies must be creative and develop new "out of the box" ideas. Innovative spirit and a strategically oriented innovation management ensure the competitiveness of SMEs and large corporations in the medium and even long term.

            Innovative employees in particular are an enormously valuable resource in this regard.

            we need a positive mindset

           that is an open attitude and relies on

           . We should start seeing the added values of process optimizations, money savings and better working conditions to seize our opportunities instead of thinking about difficulties first.

            It does not finally guarantee to be successful, but if we do not even invest this, we can be sure that innovation will not happen. 
           &#xD;

           Waking up in the morning the first thing to do for many of us is to drink a cup of coffee.

           We as people ashore take all this for granted. But what if there is no daily option to talk to our family to know how they are doing? What if there is no possibility to go out and meet friends? What if there is no filled fridge after a 16-hour working day including a spontaneous night shift? And what if the coffee is missing at the coffee break?
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Well, this is often reality for more than
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           1.8 million seafarers
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           out there.

           From our experience we know that the food on board of vessels is one of the main entertainments and a big part of the crew welfare - a mostly discussed topic in shipping nowadays. Is it really necessary that seafarers need to overcome exhausting power games against people ashore to finally get the responsibility and freedom to order their bananas and peaches? Or shouldn’t they receive this minimum of respect at least when they are expected to carry billions of value with their ships over the seven seas always with a reliable and smooth performance? It’s a rhetorical question: of course they should get the freedom!
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           A recipe for the people on board should always come from the people on board. It is difficult for us sitting ashore to consider and control the importance of cultural and religious diversity of nutrition on ships with several nationalities and different tastes.

           The power of food

            Food gives physical strength to our body. It provides us with energy to be prepared for a hard working day. It can make us feel at home when we are far away, but it can also make us sick. Food also provides mental strength. It can control the motivation of a single person or even entire crews on board and it can steer their relationship.

            The ship’s galley is not only where the cook whips up the meals, it is moreover the central meeting point on a ship where people and their stories come together and the cook finally becomes the leading character on board in regards to the mental wellbeing of their colleagues. What happens when we limit the cook‘s opportunities and make it impossible for them to serve qualified meals?
           &#xD;

           It simply causes extra mental stress. Mealtimes should be viewed as an enjoyable social experience with good, healthy food options to maintain a healthy lifestyle for our tireless key workers.

           Talking about the power of food, we also need to consider the commercial facts that exist in the shipping industry: with an insufficient quantity of food on board, ships can be held by the port state which always costs a huge amount of money for their managers - and again increases the stress level ashore.

           How to increase crew welfare

           The topic of crew welfare on board is omnipresent. It’s a mixture of the above described physical health with sports and good nutrition combined with the mental wellbeing and the social contact to families and friends. Just like the food, it’s a question of variance where balance is the key.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           Our incredible industry is asking for environmental sustainability but is currently producing food and money waste with personal preferences and emotions playing their part at the decision stage.

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

            We need to adapt to a more digital, standardised and innovative way of working to stop this waste. Innovation is described as the process of translating an idea or invention into a good service that creates value. So all we have to do is to open up for it and trust in evidence-based technology which luckily now exists. Anyway the tasks for a seafarer on board will change in the future due to digitalisation but missing signs of standardisation will keep the problem present.
           &#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           The shipping industry must understand the core problem, look for the right solution and need the courage to implement it without hedging. Our colleagues on board have suffered enough and should no longer need to rely on charities or just our goodwill to get proper welfare on board. It’s time to appreciate and give them the respect they deserve.

           Standardization - what is it and why is it important?

           Standardization simply means a harmonization after certain types. It is mostly used to have a better
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           comparability in terms of data, metrics, processes or systems.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The major purpose of standardization is to make things consistent and clear that anyone in an organization can access and utilize them in the operations. It is the first step to ensure that data is able to be shared across an organization. Standardization makes it easier to identify issues and speed up the time it takes for you to get actionable insights.

           In a maritime relation standardization is seen for example on vessels, where working processes need to be defined with very clear standards to ensure a fluent onboarding of common changing personnel on board.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           Why do we need standardization?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           There are many business reasons for standardizing processes:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           With the 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           reduction of deviations 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           you 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           higher your operational efficiency 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           and productivity. Further a creation of standards brings 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           ability to scale

           and a much 
          &#xD;

           easier process improvement

           . I think we all have a safe feeling of goods or companies, when we see an ISO certificate printed next to a company or product logo. For us it’s a guarantee of quality. In fact it is not less than the seal of the International Organization of Standardization, which allows us to safely rely on.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           When McDonald’s opens a new restaurant they carefully replicate the standardized concept, including standardized processes. The manager of the new restaurant never considers “building from scratch” because there is a process that achieves results the company is happy with. The same applies to new employee training. The entire concept relies on standardization, in the products, in the processes and the entire CI.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           "Yes, standarization is important and yes, it makes sense.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           But not in my house!"
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The specialties of a fleet with different types of vessels, the particular mix of nationalities on board, the various shipping routes or the current processes ashore – there are many reasons to pretend that standardization does really not work in a company. But what is the real reason for avoiding standardization? Because above mentioned reasons aren’t.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           A ship is a ship. The demand of a vessel is no new discovery, it’s a certain standard. Order catalogues can be adapted, ship suppliers know their job for many years and have supplied each and every kind of vessel and crew already, machines and their parts are used on more than only one vessel. They all work with standards and they all are successful with that.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           If we execute any evaluation in our everyday life, we build an average to find a result – so we build standards. So why are we sometimes skeptical and don’t trust in the power of it? Is it fear of innovation, the respect for improvement? Or just the uncertainty of a change where we do not imagine the result?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            The famous slogan of a leading sporting goods maker is to “just do it”. And we just did. We evaluated 40.000 ship deliveries from more than 2.000 worldwide suppliers in 200 countries and created a system that relies on actual data by 100%.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           We just started sailing with a new concept that finally got proved and was worth to enhance and develop. The result is a platform 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           saving substantial amounts of money for ship managers by just shifting responsibilities based on standardization and digitalization.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Summing up we can conclude that standardization kept us where we are and will always be essential for a smarter and innovative future. There will always be individuality and this is an important part of the entire consideration however if we do not at least try to open for the introduction of technical innovations we will surely pay the bill for it. The vessel of innovation has arrived, better to come on board before departure.
          &#xD;
